Gypsy Blues is owned by Cheryl & Rene, whose
crew over the majority of the past 16 years has been their sons, Chris, Adam
and Mathew, along with the family dog Windy for 11.
The family started with day sails way back in 1990 in a 17 foot Siren, built
in Owen Sound. The following season we sailed "Panache", an Edel 665 (22
feet) in Lake Ontario with frequent trips to Toronto Island where we often
took the kids to Centreville for the day.
In 1992 we tailored the boat up to Wright's Marina in Britt, on the east
coast of Georgian Bay to join Cheryl's parents on their Bayfield 25, for a 2
week vacation cruising the North Channel of Lake Huron. We had a wonderful
adventure with all 5 of us on a 22 foot boat, exploring fantastic, rugged,
new territory together with our partner boat. Such a great time in fact,
that we decided we really liked this cruising stuff, but needed a larger
boat.
In April of 1994 we took possession of our Edel 820, (28 feet) which we
playfully named "Moo View" and adorned with a cow motif. Our little hard
shelled sailing dinghy with the 5 hp outboard was called "Cowmookazi". This
boat was located in Midland which is in southern Georgian Bay. We debated
whether or not to take it down to Mississauga, or battle the traffic every
weekend for almost 2 hours each way. The one trial season in Midland area
turned into many fabulous summers sailing on what we now refer to as
Gorgeous Bay. There was absolutely no further debate about taking the boat
to Lake Ontario, and this is where the plan to one day journey far and wide
on a sailboat was born. We set the year of 2007 for our intended departure
as this year marks our 25th wedding anniversary and our youngest son would
be 20 years old.
January 2000 saw the purchase of "Vitesse 2", our fabulous Jeanneau Sun Fizz
40, with custom molded sugar scoop, 2 aft cabins, large salon table and
large cockpit complete with full enclosure. We quickly went to work to add
refrigeration, a deck wash down, new stereo with 10 disk CD changer and
install the missing 2nd head and holding tank. With her sleek lines and
Admiral Blue hull she was our pride and joy. The boys were easily able to
take friends along for weekends and so were we!
As luck and hard work would have it, we were able to move up to a larger
boat in preparation for departing in 2007. In early 2004 after several on
and off negotiations we finalized a deal for Expresso1, a 1989 Jeanneau Sun
Kiss 47 in very good condition. Our 2 youngest sons flew down to Ponce,
Puerto Rico with us to sail it for a week in April prior to the hired
skipper, Zulu and crew arriving to take it home to Canada together with our
middle son, Adam. When they arrived in Port Credit, Ontario in May we did a
serious clean up, fixed a few things, then brought her through the Great
Lakes to Bay Port Marina in Midland. We sailed her for the season to see
exactly what we liked and what we wanted to change and began work in earnest
in spring '05. By January '06 we had decided to move up our departure date
by one full year. So we christened the boat "Gypsy Blues" and worked like
busy worker bees for months, finally leaving our home dock on July 17th,
2006. The journey begins.
